MONTANA, NO!!!!!! I have Arch Linux also and got Beryl working without Xgl. I used nvidia-beta drivers and their extensions to get it. (Unless you don't have nvidia) http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beryl#Using_nvidia_drivers
I haven't tested anything 3D to see if it is normal, but if it is then it'll be better than using Xgl. Ok as of now that is a lie. I just tested it with glxgears and it runs normal, no issues whatsoever.

Use the "Using nvidia drivers" section and then from there to get it start immediately it depends whether you have Xfce, GNOME, or KDE.

I TAKE BACK EVERYTHING I SAID!!! I was just playing TCE on arch and it wasn't bad while playing, but afterwards the screen for the back would only fade a bit and stay there and linux froze. Maybe you'll have better luck with the PKGBUILDS though. Also, I feel dumb 'cause about 5 seconds ago I realized you were quoting me Confused But you guys can continue to admire my pwnage desktop on Arch linux Razz

about using linux for game-play:
1. take care about the choosen hardware(you will notice false distributor-promises very quick)

2. what hardware i use and have used(i skip older with less power):
the cpu-xxxx is the mhz-rate - not those marketing promises

A:
socket-A mainboard, AMD-cpu duron-1200, 256mb, nvidia-agp 5200
was enough to play standard enemy-territory (singleuser rctw) with good fps and 1024x768 screensize. DOOM3 was overkill, even in 640x480 only around 15-20 fps.

B:
next board, socket-A with AMD-cpu athlon-1800, 512mb
with nvidia-agp 5200 in 1280x1024 fps rates over 90
DOOM3 still with around 20fps(a bit above)
switched agp-card to GeForce-6600 and DOOM3 rates were playable, around 40 in 640x480 and over 30 in 800x600.

C:
socket-754 board with sempron-32bit-1800, other with sempron-64bit-1800,
one with 512mb, one 1024mb, GeForce 6600 and GeForce 6800
both cpu-board-combinations show nearly the same tce-0.48/enemy-territor performance in powersave-mode!! with only 1000mhz running. Fullspeed runs DOOM3 800x600 high settings smooth around 60fps. 1280x1024 screen could get some "lags/delays". Quake4 singleplayer nearly the same, multiplayer (did not understand this) has the performance playing online like quake3-arena. Hint try tremulous.
For tce.0.49 the diff. in memory is significant when loading the maps first time. The 1024MB-memory loads nearly twice as fast as with only 512mb.

Software used was from SuSE 9.2 up to now 10.0 (to switch to 10.1 would be only for fun, i will wait for 10.2 or 10.3 - changes were not very important). The only important thing for gaming with linux is the need for a separate sound-card to use teamspeak. That could be a problem with some mainboards(they disable the onboard sound if you plugin a sound-card). Sound-cards used are external usb-headset(needs only plugin before system-start or the numbering of the sound-devices may be wrong - could be manually fixed, but needs some knowledge about such device-setup), onboard mainboard-soundchipset(ac97-kinda), old pci-soundblaster, newer soundblaster, cheap no-name(dont remember the chipset). Problems with soundcards are most times the supported frequency is not always the same. So some needs special device-settings to run with 11/22/44/48kHz rates.

For all linux-setups a fast online connection is needed to get extra software like the 3d-device-driver from nvidia or some other multimedia programs for free (open-source, gpl, or other free-use-license).

ps. using linux over 10 years, first was on a 386-sx with 16MHz and 16MB and was happy as i could run the early doom on my first 486dx without booting into ms-dos.

CTF with ~6 people per side is very fun indeed. Much easier to capture, but not too easy.
