omg ..... what are you doing?

@John: why did you never put this echo-thing in the sound-init?
thats the same place where for example the initialization of the loudness and other soundcard settings are done (mute some channels and so on). And it sometimes is a quest. of the hardware-card and the driver for it.

@Rafty+@John: i have installed 10.1, but this is not my only system. I have still a 10.0 and a knoppix-harddisk-install on my computer. I did erase the system-part of the suse-9.2 about 3 month ago (cause all worked for me with 10.0, and had not booted 9.2 for several month). If you ever have a bigger harddisk (160GB and more) there should be no problem to get 30-40GB for a seperate partition to install such a test version. Even the kde-install only needs around 4-5GB, and with 30-40GB you have enough place to put tce or doom on it too. But if you plan to play 3d-games - dont use the xgl, the hardware is still not powerfull enough to do both at one time. It might be the future but today you should be aware of the limitations.

The 10.1 version makes some disturbing sounds in teamspeak. That could be the teamspeak-program, cause its older. Recording from the micro makes no disturbing sounds. And i still use the 32-bit version.

thx test. i've tried several ways, but couldnt find anyone who worked well always. so when i play in debian have to do thw shitty echo thing, or play without sound Confused .

And I have now 3 systems, too: windows, debian and RR4 (a gentoo-based, with more updated software). I hope in the future windows will be removed, but by now I need to learn and test more (and can't convince my brother, who is the main computer user...),

@John:

look as user root in /etc/init.d for the alsasound script. In it there you should find a place were the oss-soundmodule is loaded:
in SuSE its like:

Code:

start_rest() {
  load_sequencer
  if [ x"$LOAD_OSS_EMUL_MODULES" = xyes ]; then
    /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss
    test x"$LOAD_OSS_SEQ_MODULE" = xyes && /sbin/modprobe snd-seq-oss
  fi
}

there you put after the load of the snd-seq-oss and before
the ending fi the extra lines with the echos to the /proc/asound/thing.
for example for the first sound-card - these two lines:
echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
echo "et.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss
and if you use another game, same for this .... so every time
the sound-modules get loaded, these settings will be done too.

heho,
since 1. june (x)/(k)/ubuntu dapper drake is out!
http://www.ubuntu.com/

i got ubuntu since hoarey release and make all dist-uprades to breezy and now to dapper all works fine!
ubuntu use the debian apt repositories ... software en mass!

@init does apt for rpm still work with suse 10.1?

@john:
in debian u can also create a skript that setup these echo comands for gamestartups.
create a shell-skript, maybe called soundfix with that content:

Code:

#! /bin/sh
#

set -e

PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
DESC="soundfix zum zocken mit ts2"
NAME=soundfix
DAEMON=soundfix
PIDFILE=/var/run/$NAME.pid
SCRIPTNAME=/etc/init.d/$NAME

# Gracefully exit if the package has been removed.
#test -x $DAEMON || exit 0

# Read config file if it is present.
#if [ -r /etc/default/$NAME ]
#then
#   . /etc/default/$NAME
#fi

#
#   Function that starts the daemon/service.
#
d_start() {
   #start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --pidfile $PIDFILE --exec $DAEMON

   # et
   /bin/echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
   /bin/echo "et.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss

   # tremulous
   /bin/echo "tremulous.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
   /bin/echo "tremulous.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss

   # quake3
   /bin/echo "quake3.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
   /bin/echo "quake3.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss

   # warsow
   /bin/echo "warsow 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
   /bin/echo "warsow 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss

}

#
#   Function that stops the daemon/service.
#
d_stop() {
   #start-stop-daemon --stop --quiet --pidfile $PIDFILE --name $NAME
   sleep 1
}

#
#   Function that sends a SIGHUP to the daemon/service.
#
d_reload() {
   #start-stop-daemon --stop --quiet --pidfile $PIDFILE --name $NAME --signal 1
   sleep 1
}

case "$1" in
  start)
   echo -n "Starting $DESC: $NAME"
   d_start
   echo "."
   ;;
  stop)
   echo -n "Stopping $DESC: $NAME"
   d_stop
   echo "."
   ;;
  #reload)
   #
   #   If the daemon can reload its configuration without
   #   restarting (for example, when it is sent a SIGHUP),
   #   then implement that here.
   #
   #   If the daemon responds to changes in its config file
   #   directly anyway, make this an "exit 0".
   #
   # echo -n "Reloading $DESC configuration..."
   # d_reload
   # echo "done."
  #;;
  restart|force-reload)
   #
   #   If the "reload" option is implemented, move the "force-reload"
   #   option to the "reload" entry above. If not, "force-reload" is
   #   just the same as "restart".
   #
   echo -n "Restarting $DESC: $NAME"
   d_stop
   sleep 1
   d_start
   echo "."
   ;;
  *)
   # echo "Usage: $SCRIPTNAME {start|stop|restart|reload|force-reload}" >&2
   echo "Usage: $SCRIPTNAME {start|stop|restart|force-reload}" >&2
   exit 1
   ;;
esac

exit 0

in the /etc/init.d/ folder
the #lines are for info not needed, i copy the code out of my skript so dont might Surprised

then run rcconf to load that skipt at boot

maybe this will help u

ps u need rootpermissions Exclamation
@ killer: wait for vista mean wait for drm means wait for total loss of privacy .... think about it! Cool

@PanPan,
that script is nearly the same like the sound-init-scripts used in SuSE,
but more urgent, you wrote about "ts2" - thats a total different problem -
teamspeak is still a oss-only application and wants a sound-device for his own. Thats why its a pain to get the game-sounds and ts2 over the same sound-card. Only easy way out is to use a sound-hardware with hardware-mixing (and thats normaly not part of the !cheap! onboard-sound) or use a second sound-card, sound-device. The later is what i do, and i dont have to plug/unplug the headset each time i wanna hear some other sounds. Up today i have had around 9-10 different sound-cards running with linux - starting with the "good old" isa-soundblaster 8Bit !! up to 3 different onboard-soundchips, and an usb-headset (its usb-audio compatible and works with SuSE 10.1 too, while the Soundblaster Live! with CA0106 makes some whistle-noises with teamspeak - but only with SuSE-10.1 not with 10.0 !!)
and at last for those not familiar with the hardware, keep in mind the hardware is changing very quick and you still wanna use the same software - even the sound-cards now mostly use 48.000 Hz instead the old 44.1000 Hz - thats the way to make it cheap and let the software do the work and the user wonders why his computer is getting slower and slower ...
